Take every thought captive.

If someone walked up to you and handed you a vial of poison, would you reach out and take it?

Would you drink it?

No, you wouldn’t- you would refuse it and probably keep your distance from that person.

Why is it, then, when Satan offers us poisonous, intrusive thoughts- we take them?

We allow these horrible thoughts into our minds, allowing the enemy’s poison to darken our minds, hearts, and souls with his lies.

In 2 Corinthians 10:5, we read: “Take every thought captive in obedience to Christ.”

When a horrible, untrue, worrisome thought enters our minds, we must not accept it- we must take it captive to the obedience of Christ.

Taking a thought captive means not letting it move, not letting it grow, not letting it lead you into a downward spiral, mentally, spiritually, or emotionally.

We can also take our thoughts captive by challenging them.

If an offensive or untrue thought enters my brain, my best defense is to question it.

Is this thought the truth?

No.

Is it from me?

No.

Is it causing me anxiety, worry, or fear?

It’s trying to.

What did Jesus say about worry?

“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

Jesus doesn’t want us to worry- which also means not entertaining anxious, poisonous thoughts.

The battleground for spiritual warfare is in the mind. If allowed, the enemy will continue to gain as much ground as possible. He will control not only the mind but also the heart. We must pray for discernment to recognize the poisonous thoughts of the adversary.

May God bless us in our efforts to overcome the spiritual attacks of the enemy.
