I was reading through the 23rd chapter of Luke last night- it tells of our Savior’s crucifixion. It is a difficult chapter to get through- the betrayals, the scourgings, the jeering crowds. It is heavy and dark.
I had a moment of clarity when I reached the part where one of the criminals crucified next to Jesus was conversing with Him. At the very end of his life, this man realized the error of his ways and actions. He admitted that he was receiving justice for his crimes. He also stated that Christ had done no wrong and did not deserve the horrible death he was going through.
I believe that it was with sincerity that this man pleaded with Jesus:
“Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.”
And Jesus, in His unmatched compassion, responded:
“Verily I say unto thee, today shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
It does not matter if we sinned more or less than the man crucified next to Christ. At the end of our lives, every single one of us will say the same thing:
Lord, remember me!
He does remember each of us- He knows each of us on such a personal level. Let us strive to remember Him in our thoughts, words, and actions as we go about each day. We cannot forget His sacrifice for us- and His perfect example of kindness, forgiveness, and love.
