Over a decade ago, I took a volunteer position within my local church that I felt very unqualified to fill. I won’t go into specifics, but every Sunday was a challenge for me. I would work on what the position called for every night for hours on end.
Every Sunday, it seemed like my stress level would be through the roof. I had such a hard time just keeping it together. I would pray all the time that things would go well during the meetings.
I remember one Sunday during the Christmas season where the frustration and comparison hit me so hard- I wasn’t the best at what I was doing. Not the best, by far. The service hadn’t gone very well. There were so many others that could’ve taken my place, and it would’ve been better. I just felt so worthless.
I slipped out of the church and ran to my car. Tears were streaming down my face. I decided to go for a drive. I turned on the radio- and this song, “The Little Drummer Boy,” was playing. The lyrics caught my attention in a way that they never had before:
I have no gift to bring
That’s fit to give our King
I played my drum for Him
I played my best for Him
Then He smiled at me
Me and my drum
A wave of peace and love and the Spirit washed over me. I knew that my efforts mattered to the Lord. He saw me and how hard I was trying. He knew I wasn’t the best, and yet, He didn’t love me any less.
We are all like the little drummer boy. We might think that we have nothing worthy to give the Lord- that our small offering doesn’t matter. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I found out that day that our efforts matter to Him, regardless of what others may think of us or our level of proficiency. When we’re trying- “playing” our best for Him – He smiles upon us. He’s there supporting us every step of the way.
Ever since that day, I have a new found love for this song. I hope you enjoy For King and Country’s version of it. If you watch the video until the end, you’ll see them walk through the incredible Jerusalem set in Goshen, Utah.
Wishing you a beautiful day!
Love,
Amber
